MEMSIC offers cost effective and robust solutions for sensing the orientation of a device and setting portrait or landscape display mode.
Typically such a solution is required in a handheld device such as a mobile phone, tablet, or camera. The MXC6226XU and MXC6226XC are accelerometers which are designed specifically for this purpose. Each offers a built-in 45° angle threshold, and an interrupt output that alerts the processor to a change in orientation. A programmable hysteresis function prevents "chattering" around the threshold, and also allows the designer to set a delay after which the change in orientation is considered valid.
The 8-bit accelerometer outputs are available via I2C interface, which allows the devices to be used for other functions in addition to display orientation.
LIke all of MEMSIC's thermal accelerometers, these devices are extremely robust and reliable, with no moving parts. The proof mass in the accelerometer consists of heated gas molecules. As a result, these devices are virtually indestructable, with 50,000g shock tolerance, and have outstanding dc characteristics and offset drift.
